Plain words, feet and inches. Dex shows the numbers and how it got them.

    How it works

Pavers: the patio area divided by one paver’s face, plus your extra for cuts: pavers = area ÷ (paver L × paver W ÷ 144) × (1 + extra).

Base: area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 gives cubic yards. Crushed stone compacts, so the calculator adds 15% to the base. Tons use about 1.4 tons per cubic yard for crushed stone.

Bedding sand is usually 1" deep, screeded flat, at about 1.35 tons per cubic yard.

    Worked example

    A 12 × 16 ft patio with 4 × 8" pavers. 192 ft² ÷ 0.222 ft² = 864 pavers, and with 10% extra, 951 pavers.

A 6" base is 96 ft³ (3.56 yd³); with 15% for compaction that is 4.09 yd³, about 5.7 tons of crushed stone.

1" of sand is 16 ft³: 0.59 yd³, about 0.8 tons.

    Questions people ask

How many pavers per square foot?

    4.5 for 4 × 8" pavers, 2.67 for 6 × 9", 1 for 12 × 12". Add 5 to 15% for cuts depending on the pattern.

How deep should the gravel base be?

4 to 6" compacted for patios and walks, 8 to 12" for driveways, more on clay or wet ground.

How much extra should I add for a herringbone pattern?

About 15%: herringbone and curves have more cuts along every edge.

How many tons is a yard of crushed stone?

Around 1.3 to 1.5 tons, depending on the stone and how wet it is. This calculator uses 1.4; your supplier’s number wins.
