Plain words, feet and inches. Dex shows the numbers and how it got them.

    How it works

Cubic feet are length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12), and cubic yards are cubic feet ÷ 27.

Stone and soil are sold by the ton too. Typical weights: crushed stone and pea gravel about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, river rock and sand about 1.35, topsoil about 1.1. Wet material weighs more.

Mulch is sold by the yard or in 2 ft³ bags (13.5 bags to a yard).

    Worked example

    A 10 × 20 ft area at 3" deep is 50 ft³: 1.85 yd³.

In crushed stone that is about 2.6 tons; in mulch, 25 bags of 2 ft³.
